Do You Need a Wedding MC?
Not every wedding needs a professional MC.
There. An MC said it.
If your reception is small, simple and you have a confident friend who genuinely enjoys speaking to a room, that can work beautifully. The problem starts when “Can you make a couple of announcements?” quietly becomes “Can you run the entire reception for six hours?”
The real question: who is going to keep the night moving while you are busy being at your own wedding?
What does a wedding MC actually do?
The microphone is the visible bit. Most of the useful work happens around it.
A good MC connects the couple, venue, kitchen, photographer, videographer, DJ or band and the room itself. They manage the run sheet, introduce people properly, keep speeches moving, watch meal timing, make announcements and adjust when the original plan stops being the plan.
If the reception feels relaxed while a dozen things are happening behind the scenes, somebody is usually keeping an eye on it.
When a friend can absolutely do it
Use a friend if they are confident, organised and actually want the role.
Give them a proper run sheet, pronunciations, speaker order, supplier contacts and permission to ask the venue for help. Do not choose them just because they are funny after two drinks.
And remember they are a guest too. If you want them on the dance floor rather than checking whether mains are ten minutes late, that matters.
When a professional MC starts making sense
A professional MC becomes more useful when you have a bigger room, multiple speeches, formal entrances, cultural elements, entertainment, games, tight venue timing or several suppliers who need coordinating.
It is also valuable when you simply do not want family members carrying responsibility for the night.
Pauli’s take: a good MC should make the reception feel less managed, not more managed.
What about a small wedding?
Small weddings can benefit from an MC more than people expect because every transition is more visible. Nobody wants to shout across 35 people, “Are we doing speeches now?”
The job can be subtle. Guide the room, introduce the important bits, keep the venue informed and then disappear back into the atmosphere.
The run sheet matters more than the announcements
I build the reception around the venue, meals, speeches, photography, entertainment and the couple’s priorities. The timetable needs structure, but it also needs room to breathe.
If you are doing it yourself, use my wedding reception run sheet guide.
What does my MC service include?
My Sydney wedding MC service is $1,500 and includes run sheet design, venue coordination, bespoke introductions, formalities and optional games where they genuinely suit the crowd.
If I am also your celebrant, the combined Celebrant + MC package is $2,700, which saves $300 and keeps one familiar person across the whole day.
So, do you need one?
If the reception is simple and you have exactly the right person, probably not. If there are enough moving parts that somebody needs to actively manage the night, a professional MC can remove a surprising amount of pressure from you, your family and the venue.
Send Paul Wheeler your venue, guest numbers and rough plan. I’ll tell you whether I genuinely think professional MCing adds value. If it does not, I’ll tell you that too.
